Lyman Dale Hansen

November 14, 1924 — May 30, 2018

Lyman Dale Hansen, 93, passed away in the early morning of May 30, 2018. Lyman was born November 14, 1924, to John T. and Sena Holjeson Hansen in Smithfield, Utah, where he created memories with his six siblings. Lyman attended North Cache High School before enlisting in the Navy and serving for three years on LSM8 in the Pacific, making lifelong friendships with his shipmates.
Lyman married Vella Haderlie from Freedom, Wyoming, on February 7, 1947, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Lyman and Vella raised five children: Dale (Gayle) Hansen, Von (Julia) Hansen, Penny (Charles) Findlay, Madlyn (Mark, deceased) Huber, and Douglas (Lynda) Hansen. He was a proud grandpa to 27 grandchildren and 42 great grandchildren.
A man of few words at times, Lyman led and taught through example to work hard, be committed, gain knowledge, and serve and sacrifice. His grandchildren gained insights from the gentleness and care he gave his wife Vella as she struggled with memory loss before her passing in 2010. His testimony of Christ and the gospel grew as he lived and worked to create a forever family.
Lyman owned and operated the Conoco Service Station in Smithfield for 30 years, but his passion was building the fire-fighting community in Cache County. He served as a fireman for 43 years, as the Smithfield Fire Chief for 40 years, as the Cache County Fire Chief for 19 years, and as a Utah Fire Marshal. His dedication and contributions to volunteer fire services in Cache County were recognized by many agencies; he was awarded Smithfield’s Citizen of the Year for his work in the community.
Lyman spent his final years at Terrace Grove in Logan, where he built friendships with residents and staff. He showed gentleness and courage through his last painful weeks. His ability to endure and persevere will be remembered. The family thanks Terrace Grove staff and all the doctors, nurses, and support staff who so lovingly cared for him.
Lyman is survived by his children, by Vella’s sister Nelda (Willard) Oakeson, and by grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Vella, all of his and Vella’s other siblings and spouses, a daughter-in-law Susan, a son-in-law, and his granddaughter Brenna.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Monday, June 4, in the Smithfield 24th Ward building, 451 South 250 East. A viewing will be Sunday, June 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Nelson Funeral Home, 84 South Main, Smithfield, and from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. prior to the funeral at the church. Burial will be in the Smithfield City Cemetery.
