Christena Squires Spence Anderson

October 4, 1915 — March 22, 2010

Christena and Elgo Anderson have been reunited after a brief separation from their eternal love. Christena passed away March 22, 2010 at the age of 94 with her family gathered by her side. Christena was born October 4, 1915 to Alexander Dunkerley Spence and Lessie Lucille Squires in Wellsville, Ut. Elgo Hiram Anderson and Christena Squires Spence were sealed for time and all eternity in the Logan LDS Temple, May 1, 1935. At that time, she moved to College Ward to live with Elgo and his family on the family farm. She has resided in College Ward since that time. Christena was a very people oriented person, she loved to visit, and she had a good listening ear. She had a large heart and great capacity to serve. She was a natural born leader. She served as president and as a counselor in the Relief Society, Young Women's, and Primary. She served in many teaching positions in the Primary and the Sunday School. Christena had to give up visiting teaching in her early nineties because she could no longer climb the steps to get into the sisters homes. Christena was a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and Vice President of the PTA. Christena was very talented and had many hobbies. She loved sewing, cooking, and all kinds of hand work. She really loved gardening of all kinds. Roses were her favorite things to grow; when she was young she had 100 rose bushes in her yard that she cared for all summer. Her favorite indoor plant was the African violet. Christena was employed by her family full time for years, and loved every minute of it. She was employed every now and again out of the home for brief periods. She worked at the Bushnell Army Hospital as a server in the dining room during World War II. Christena is survived by her children: Carolee Swensen Dennis; LaDawn Foster Melvin; Pat Anderson daughter-in-law; Lex Anderson Penni; Linda Anderson daughter-in-law; 20 grandchildren; 60 great grandchildren; 28 great-great grandchildren; and also one brother: Ivan S. Spence Shirley. She was preceded in death by her husband and one son, Elgo Val Anderson; and three brothers: Clifford, Mark, and DeLoyd Spence. The family would like to thank all the staff at Cache Valley Assisted Living Center and Alpine Hospice for all the love and care they have provided for our beloved mother. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon Friday, March 26, 2010 at the College Ward Chapel, 2394 West 2200 South. Friends and family may call Thursday evening, March 23, 2010 at Nelson Funeral Home, 162 East 400 North, Logan from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday morning at the College Ward church one hour prior to services. Interment will be in the Hyrum Cemetery. Condolences may be extended to the family online at www.nelsonfuneralhome.com .
