Edries Nelson Hansen

May 21, 1913 — March 23, 2011

Edries N. Hansen, 97, of Newton, passed away peacefully at dusk on March 23, 2011 at Legacy House Assisted Living in Logan, Utah. Edries was born on May 21, 1913 in Newton to Eugene Nelson and Christena Hogenson Nelson ? one of 10 brothers and sisters. She attended Newton Elementary School and graduated from North Cache High School. She married Sidney D. Hansen, also from Newton, on March 1, 1933. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple on March 1, 1940. Mom moved from the south end of town to the north end where she lived the rest of her life until she moved to Legacy House in 2008 -- loving every day in Newton. From their union came five children: Elaine Orrin Hatch, Vienna, Virginia; Ramon deceased; Glenna Leon, deceased Petersen, Newton; Carma Joe Mirabal, Hayward, California; and Doris Dave Crockett, Smithfield. She has 21 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister, Dorine Haycock of Salt Lake City and many nieces and nephews. Following their marriage, Mom immediately became not only a newlywed and housewife, but also took care of her father-in-law, James until his death in 1953 as well as Sid?s younger sister. In addition, she later watched over her own parents and older sister until they passed on. Since Dad passed away on November 1, 1991, Mom has shown great courage overseeing the operation of their farms in Utah and Idaho. When she was younger, she milked cows, moved pipe, pulled wild rye from the fields, plucked chickens, kept a large garden, drove a wheat truck during harvest, and did whatever was necessary. Mom dedicated her life to making our home pleasant and full of fun playing rook, canasta, hearts, etc.. Many wonderful conversations took place in the kitchen and living room. Friends never left her home without a hand-dipped chocolate, divinity, or some other special treat. We can still smell the wonderful cinnamon rolls, bread, and overnight cookies baking. Always willing and active, Mom served in almost every organization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Many lives have been brightened by the hundreds of knit hats she wove for charities and friends, saving a few for her posterity. She remained active knitting the hats until one week prior to her death. A faithful fan, she dearly loved and ?coached? the Jazz basketball team. Throughout her life she enjoyed many sweet friendships with young and old alike. Little children seemed to gravitate to her, with one special little friend bringing her cookies and calling her ?Edis? and another calling her ?Grandma Sid.? During the last three years spent at Legacy House, she forged many great friendships with the other residents as well as the staff. We are grateful and thankful for the sweet and attentive care she received there. Her light-hearted attitude helped make many warm and special relationships with the wonderful CNAs. Her greatest legacy is her example of honesty, compassion, hard work, love and loyalty to her family, her friends, and her church. She always had a smile and warm greeting for everyone. Her motto has always been to ?spread sunshine? wherever she was. She was truly a person to emulate with her beautiful, cheery ways. We will miss you terribly Mom but we?ll see you in the eternities! Funeral services will be held Monday in Newton at the Newton Ward Chapel at 11:00 a.m. There will be a viewing Sunday afternoon from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Nelson Funeral Home, 162 East 400 North, Logan, and at the church on Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in the Newton Cemetery. Edries? family would like to thank the staff of Legacy House, Access Hospice and Dr. Thomas Clark for their kind and loving care of Mom. With many needs in the world, the family respectfully requests donations in lieu of flowers to the LDS Humanitarian Services.
