Erlene Lewis Bennion

Leah Erlene Lewis Bennion, 82, passed away peacefully at Logan Regional Hospital in Logan, UT on February 6, 2010. Erlene was born November 1, 1927 to J. Earl and Leah Henrichsen Lewis in Provo, UT the first of four children. She grew up in Provo and attended Provo High School. Upon graduation she attended Brigham Young University. She married Merril "Bud" Bennion on October 26, 1948 in the Salt Lake Temple. Shortly thereafter she received an LDS mission call to serve in the Northern California Mission. Erlene and Bud lived in many places for education and employment including Provo, New York, and Colorado, where they started their family. They made their home in Bountiful before moving to Logan in 1968. Erlene taught violin and viola lessons privately for 33 years and also taught orchestra in the Logan School District for 21 years. Together Bud and Erlene raised five children.
Erlene enjoyed music all of her life. Her years with her violin are precious to her along with the many students whose lives she touched while teaching. She also played with the Cache Chamber Orchestra for many years. Erlene was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She loved having her family around and opened her home to her grandchildren and their friends.
Erlene was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and had a strong testimony. She served as a chorister and taught in all the organizations the church. She served in presidencies of the Relief Society, Mutual and Primary organizations. Erlene and Bud served a mission in Sydney Australia NSW from 1990 to 1992. Upon returning home, they officiated in the Logan Temple for 10 years.
Erlene was preceded in death by her husband Bud, son David, and by her parents and two sisters. She is survived by her children, Dale Kathy, Brigham City, Tom & LuAnne Bladen, Hyde Park, Curt Brooke, Las Vegas, Lyn Roger Manning, Smithfield currently serving in the Lima Peru South Mission, Randy Julie, North Logan; 27 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and her brother Jay Pam Lewis, Orem. Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 11th at 11:00 am at the Logan 9th ward chapel, 100 East 500 North. Viewings will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Wednesday at Nelson Funeral Home, 162 East 400 North, Logan and Thursday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment will be at the Logan Cemetery. Condolences may be extended to the family online at www.nelsonfuneralhome.com .
