Evelyn Hillyard Hansen

August 24, 1930 — October 26, 2009

Evelyn Hillyard Hansen died October 26, 2009 at Logan Regional Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Evelyn was born on August 24, 1930, the youngest child of W. Hazen and Ruby Hillyard. She loved her parents and family deeply and endeavored to honor her Father and Mother throughout her life. Evelyn was raised in Smithfield, Utah. She attended school in Cache County and graduated from North Cache High School. After high school, Evelyn attended Utah State Agricultural College where she graduated in 1952 with a double major in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education. Following her graduation, she taught elementary school for several years in Brigham City and Trenton, Utah. Evelyn married A. LaVor Hansen on June 9, 1954 in the Logan LDS Temple. LaVor died May 23, 2000. They were blessed with three daughters and two sons. They have lived in Amalga, Utah for many years. Evelyn took a great interest in the lives of her family and wrote that her husband and children were her main interest and joy. She has always been involved in their activities and education. Evelyn's grandchildren were also a source of joy to her and she loved helping them preserve family memories through stories, histories, and scrapbooks. Her other interests included tending her garden, sewing and quilting. She loved preparing bottled fruits and vegetables each fall for her family to enjoy. Evelyn was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Her life has been an example of obedience to the principles of the gospel and selfless service to others. She served in many capacities in the Amalga Ward including working with the MIA, Relief Society and Primary. She also found great joy in organizing a story hour for children in the community. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband and parents. She is survived by her five children and their spouses, Susan and Bruce Hanks, Alpine; Mary and Spencer Stokes, Ogden; Morris and Gwen Hansen, Amalga; Jane and Brett Payne, Smithfield; and Thomas and Sheri Hansen, Wellsville; and her 16 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren who brought joy and happiness to her life. Also surviving are her 2 brothers, Randall and Ferris Hillyard, and 2 sisters, Marva Egbert and Eunice Davis. Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 30th at 2:00 p.m. in the Benson, Utah Stake Center, 6521 North 2400 West, Amalga. Friends may call from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Nelson Funeral Home, 85 South Main, Smithfield, and at the Benson Stake Center in Amalga from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Friday morning prior to the funeral services. Burial will be in the Smithfield City Cemetery. Condolences may be extended to the family online at www.nelsonfuneralhome.com .
