Fred Abel

August 19, 1932 — November 4, 2009

Our beloved father and grandfather Fred Abel passed away peacefully at Logan Regional Hospital surrounded by his family on Wednesday, November 4, 2009. Fred was born on August 19, 1932 to Thomas Ammon and Frances Brook Abel. He grew up in Elwood, UT and attended Bear River High School. Fred joined the Army National Guard and retired after 32 years. While in the Guard, he went on drills and summer camps to many places and repaired the BIG trucks. He worked at Joe's Auto Repair where he met his wife, Lila Marie Kemp. They were married in the Logan LDS Temple on March 5, 1954. They had a wonderful life together until she passed away in 2003. Now they are together for eternity. Fred enjoyed camping with his family, hunting and joining his friends at R&G's Drive-In. He was a member of the LDS Church and enjoyed working with the Boy Scouts. Fred was a volunteer firefighter for 30 years and loved serving others. After retiring he enjoyed woodworking and being a jack- of-all-trades for others. Fred is survived by 7 children: Dixie Jay Bassett, Smithfield; Christine Abel, Smithfield; Barbara Rogers, Smithfield; Rodney Abel, Logan; Todd Kathi Abel, Draper; Trudi Jim Low, North Logan; Eric TrinaDee Abel, Smithfield, 31 grandchildren with one more on the way and 22 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by 3 sisters: Edith, Erma, and Jean; and 4 brothers: Ernest, Roy, Ralph and Kenneth. He is preceded in death by his wife, parents, 3 brothers, 2 sisters, and 1 grandson T.J. Abel Dad is loved by many and will be greatly missed. He is now with his eternal mate and love, who we all love. We love you Dad. Enjoy your new life with Mom. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 7, 2009 at the Smithfield 11th Ward Chapel, 79 East 200 South, Smithfield, Utah. Friends and family may call Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home, 85 South Main, Smithfield and Saturday at the church from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. prior to services. Interment will be in the Smithfield City Cemetery. Condolences may be extended to the family online at www.nelsonfuneralhome.com . The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Logan Regional Hospital who took care of Fred. Also a big thanks to Dr. Ali Ben-Jacob and Dr. Mark Huffman and their staffs for all the many hours of love and concern they have given to Dad over the years of treatments. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations be made to the Cache Valley Cancer Center.
