LuDean Gilbert Maughan

January 9, 1927 — December 3, 2023

LuDean was born on January 9, 1927, in Bancroft, Idaho, at the family home. She was the 9th of 10 children. On December 3, 2023, she passed away peacefully at 96 due to incidence of age.

LuDean graduated from Idaho State University with a degree in Elementary Education and taught school for two years in Lava Hot Springs, ID. She was called on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints to the New York State, Hill Cumorah Mission.

While teaching in Lava Hot Springs, she met her husband, Wesley T. Maughan. They were married in the Logan, Utah Temple on July 18, 1950. Wes and LuDean had six children: Steven Larry (Leslie) Maughan of Tonto Basin, AZ; LuAnn (Burdette) Stocking of North Logan, UT; Sandra Maughan; Kayleen (John) Teed of Muscatine, IA; James Raymond Maughan; Jana Lee (Robert) Checketts of Plain City, UT. She has 20 Grandchildren, 45 Great Grandchildren, and 4 Great Great Grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wes; parents, James Harris and Jennie (Swainston) Gilbert; infant daughter, Sandra; son, James; grandson, M. Rocky Checketts; great grand-daughter Haven Checketts; great grand-daughter Lillie LuDean Checketts; and her nine brothers and sisters and their spouses.

LuDean lived in many places throughout her life and finally settled in Logan, Utah, where they lived for 53 years. She spent the last years of her life in Ogden, Utah, to be close to family.

LuDean loved to crochet, knit, paint, and sew. Some of her greatest passions were African Violets, Family History, and gardening. She was incredibly talented and played the piano, organ, and accordion.

LuDean had a heart of gold and will be greatly missed by all who loved her. She is at peace now and free from the pains and heartaches of this world. Thank you to all at the Legacy House and the others who profoundly and passionately cared for her.

Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, December 6, 2023 at 1 pm at Nelson Funeral Home (162 E 400 N). A viewing will proceed the funeral from 12 to 12:45 pm. Interment will follow at the Logan City Cemetery.
