Merrill L. 'Bud' Bennion

Merrill L. "Bud" Bennion, 82, passed away peacefully at Sunshine Terrace in Logan, UT on October 26, 2009. Bud was born October 12, 1927 to Merrill and Geneva Bennion in SLC, UT the fifth of eight children. He grew up in Salt Lake and attended West High School. Upon graduation in 1945, he enlisted in the navy and served in WWII. He married Leah Erlene Lewis on October 26, 1948 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Within a year he received a mission call to serve in the Eastern States Mission. He and Erlene lived in many places for education and employment with IBM including Provo, New York, and Colorado, where they started their family. They also lived in Bountiful before moving to Logan in 1968. Bud worked for USU as a telecommunications engineer. He graduated from USU with a BS in aeronautics. Together Bud and Erlene raised five children.
Bud enjoyed music all of his life. He sang with many choirs including the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the Towne Singers. Bud was an avid gardener and loved to share his knowledge and harvest with family and friends. He was happy to help others with their tilling and spraying of fruit trees. Bud also had a love of airplanes, working in the yard and spending time with family.
Bud was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and had a strong testimony. He served in Elders Quorum, Seventies, High Priests, Music, Scouting and other organizations within the church. He and Erlene served a mission in Sydney Australia NSW from 1990 to 1992. Upon returning home, they officiated in the Logan Temple for 10 years.
Bud was preceded in death by his son David, and by his parents and four siblings. He is survived by his wife, Erlene; children: Dale Kathy, Brigham City; Tom & LuAnne Bladen, Hyde Park; Curt Brooke, Las Vegas; Lyn Roger Manning, Smithfield currently serving in the Lima Peru South Mission; Randy Julie, North Logan; 27 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; a brother, Bruce and sisters, Virginia and Dawna.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Friday, October 30th at the Logan 9th ward chapel, 100 East 500 North. Viewings will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Thursday evening at Nelson Funeral Home, 162 East 400 North, Logan and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church prior to services. Interment will be in the Logan City Cemetery. Condolences may be extended to the family online at www.nelsonfuneralhome.com .
The family would like to express thanks to all the health care professionals, neighbors, and friends who lovingly cared for Bud. Your service is greatly appreciated. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the LDS Church missionary fund or perpetual education fund.
