Winona Hale Vail

March 6, 1910 — June 14, 2008

Winona Hale Vail, 98, died Saturday, June 14, 2008 in Logan, Utah. She was born March 6, 1910 in Groveland, Idaho to Sylvia Jensen and Eugene Clark Hale. She was the oldest of 6 children.
Her family moved to Logan, Utah in 1926. She attended Logan High School where she played on the girls' basketball team. She graduated in 1929.
She worked in the first root beer stand in Logan, the ABC Root Beer Stand, which her family owned. She met her husband-to-be, Ammon Vail, when he delivered ice and hamburger to the stand. They were married on September 14, 1932 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They moved to Hyde Park, Utah in 1935 and bought the little grocery store there. They operated the store for 30 years, and then sold it in 1965. They loved to go fishing on the Snake River, The Grays and Salt Rivers in Wyoming. Ammon died on August 16, 1992.
Winona held positions in all of the auxiliaries and also served on the stake YW board. She was also a visiting teacher for many years. Winona and Ammon served as temple officiators for 2 ½ years.
Winona served as Captain of the William Hyde Camp of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers for 2 terms and as lesson leader for 4 terms. She also served on the county level.
Winona was an excellent seamstress. She also loved to crochet and quilt, and made numerous quilts and afghans for her family.
Her homemade bread and rolls were her family's favorite.
Winona spent many, many hours doing services and caring for her family, friends and neighbors.
She and Ammon had 4 children: Sherron William deceased; Eldene Jeppson of Brigham City; Eugene Cordell Janice Vail, Gig Harbor, Wash.; Mary Jean Danny Nielsen of Hyde Park. She has 23 grandchildren, 73 great grandchildren and 8 great-great grandchildren.
She is also survived by 2 sisters: Guinivere Hatch, Madera, Ca.; and Kleta Crosbie of River Heights; and a daughter in law, Lois Vail of Logan.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; son, Sherron; brother, Woodrow Hale; two sisters, Eunice Larsen and Jean Olsen; son in law, Alvin Jeppson, granddaughter, Sarah Vail; great granddaughter, Ashley Green; great grandson, Avery Vail.
Winona has resided for the last 5 ½ years at Logan Nursing and Rehab. Our family would like to express our sincere thanks to the nurses and staff for their kind and very loving care they have given our dear mother.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 21st at the Hyde Park Center Street church 65 East Center at 11:00 a.m. The viewing will be Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home 162 East 400 North, Logan and on Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 prior to services at the church. Interment will be in the Hyde Park Cemetery.
