Daniel Joseph McGough was born May 16, 1953, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Charles Gehring McGough and Anne Frances Hoop. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Anthony Charles (Helen Nimmo), Robert Harry (Lois McCracken), and Mark Steven; and his sister Shirley Ann (James Sutton).
He is survived by his sister Mary Elizabeth (Paul Wynkoop) and his brother Charles Raymond (Susan Flanagan). He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jill Louise Skidmore, in November 2002. He leaves behind his children: Megan, Kathryn (Nate Pugh), and Michael, as well as three granddaughters, Samantha, Phoebe, and Violet. In July 2021, Dan married Kelly LeighAnna Van Horn.
Dan joined the United States Navy in October 1973, where he embraced the challenges of submarine service. He was honorably discharged in April 1979.
While stationed in Florida, Dan joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in September 1977. His faith became a central part of his life, leading him to later serve a two-year mission in Arcadia, California.
After his mission, Dan attended Brigham Young University, where he met his first wife, Jill. They were sealed in the Logan Temple in November 1982. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Manufacturing Engineering Technology and went on to work for Thiokol, contributing to the construction of solid rocket motors for the Space Shuttle.
Dan had a gift for connection—he never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone. He loved learning, reading, and exploring new ideas and possibilities.
He developed a passion for running and completed many marathons across Utah and other states. When running was no longer possible, he turned to biking, enjoying rides with friends throughout the valley, the mountains, and beyond.
An exceptionally skilled genealogist, Dan dedicated countless hours to family history work. He taught genealogical and religious classes, helped solve complex family history mysteries, and built connections with people around the world. He also found great joy in serving in the temple for many years. Even during illness, he continued to serve in the temple and his community as long as he was able.
Dan had a deep love for service and was always seeking opportunities to help others. His love for and testimony of his Savior guided his life and his actions. His kindness, curiosity, and willingness to serve will be remembered by all who knew him.
