Douglas Kirk Reiter

December 16, 1953 — January 2, 2026

Logan

Douglas (Doug) Reiter, 72, died at his home in Logan, Utah during the 2025 holiday season, of natural causes. He is the son of Melba Broman Reiter and Donald (Tony) Reiter of Salt Lake City, Utah.

As a recent graduate of Skyline High School, the characteristically independent, adventurous, and determined Doug made a solo bicycle journey to Portland, Oregon. He then settled in Telluride, Colorado before returning to Salt Lake City, where he was employed as an architectural draftsman.

Doug found place and purpose when he arrived in Logan to begin studies at Utah State University (1991.) He earned a Bachelor of Science and Master’s Degree in Recreational Resource Management (1999.) Doug stayed on to research “the public’s beliefs, attitudes, and values relating to the use of natural resources and public land management/policies.” He traveled throughout Utah and western states to interview hikers, boaters, hunters, campers and many others, resulting in publication of numerous reports and studies.

He was passionate about all music and played several instruments, including guitar, autoharp, and keyboard. His culinary specialties—lasagna, pot roast, and Swedish pancakes— were family favorites. Doug will be remembered for his intellect, wry humor, and deep connection with the natural world.

Doug never married. He is survived by his brothers Anthony (Virginia Byrd) Reiter and Scott (Tonya Saxton) Reiter, and nieces and nephews Christian, Kirsten, Peter, and Tess. A private service is planned for the family.
