Jay Claude Bennett, 96, passed away peacefully at Logan Regional Hospital on Monday, April 20th of natural causes. Jay was born to George H. and Norma Ellery Bennett July 20th, 1929, in Ogden, Utah. He was the first of eight children and grew up working
alongside his parents and siblings on the family farm in Syracuse, Utah. He was taught the importance of hard work and carried that work ethic throughout his life. He graduated from Davis High School and attended college for a short while before serving a two-year LDS
mission in England. He was fortunate to be able to travel extensively throughout Europe with a former mission companion before returning home. He married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Tree, on December 13th, 1951, in the Salt Lake Temple.
He was drafted into the US Army ten days later and did his basic training at Camp Roberts in California. After completing his 16 weeks of basic training, he was chosen to attend an additional 8 weeks of leadership school. He was assigned to the 2nd Armored Calvary Unit that was based on the German/Czech border in the office of the Regimental Command Headquarters. He was given top-secret clearance, which afforded him many opportunities to serve the country he loved.
In addition to his military service, Jay worked in retail management for many years in both California and Utah while serving various positions in his church and community. His church callings included being a member of the bishopric, home teacher, ward missionary and primary teacher. In each of these roles, Jay was recognized and greatly respected for his kindness and dedication.
While Jay loved serving his church and community, his most cherished calling was that of husband, father, and grandfather. He is proceeded in death by Shirley, his loving sweetheart of 67 years, grandson, Bennett J Pella, and siblings Val, Wendall, Scott, Floyd, Connie, and Dorothy. He is survived by his son, Steven Jay Bennett (AnnMarie), daughters Jan Preslar (Joe) and Susanne Hansen, brother Ellery Bennett (Le Anne), brother-in-law
Glen Bouy, sisters-in-law Marilyn Bennett and Marie Bennett-Warner, 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
