Max Jay Hillyard, our beloved father, grandpa and great-grandpa, returned to his heavenly home on July 30, 2024, at the age of 93, in Smithfield Utah. He must be having a great reunion on the other side with his parents, siblings; Verla (Norm) Watkins and Ferrell (Carma) Hillyard, Vaughn Blair. His cherished grandson, Jeremy Hillyard, and his beloved wife Veda Hillyard.
Max was born in, Smithfield Utah, on March 22, 1931. He learned the value of hard-work at an early age, working diligently with his dad on the farm. It was this mentality that lead him to meet his wife Veda while working in the beet fields, she quickly fell in love with his passion for service and his playful nature. How he loved to tease her, he was quick to take any opportunity to make her laugh. Known for his playful nature, Max was always ready with a good-natured tease and smile.
An adventurous spirit who loved the great outdoors Max frequently took his wife and four children on camping trips, where they explored nature, learned new skills, and bonded over campfires and stories. These trips were filled with adventure and laughter, creating cherished memories that his children will carry with them forever.
Max found joy in every aspect of nature, from tending to his vibrant garden to exploring the beauty of the wilderness on his many hiking, hunting and fishing trips. Max’s passion for fishing was unparalleled, he cherished quiet moments spent by the water, waiting for the perfect catch.
A devoted servant to the community, Max spent countless hours working with the Scouts. His passion for mentoring and guiding young minds was evident in the way he inspired generations of Scouts, teaching them life skills and instilling in them the principles of integrity, responsibility and leadership.
For many years, Max worked as an electrician, a profession in which he excelled. His expertise and dedication to his trade was widely respected. Beyond his professional work, Max was known for his generosity, often providing free electrical services to those in need in his community. His selflessness and willingness to help others reflected his kind heart and strong sense of community.
In 2004 Max and Veda completed a lifelong dream, they served a mission for the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Martin’s Cove, Wyoming. Deeply dedicated to his religion, Max’s faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding him with strength and purpose. His commitment to his beliefs was evident in all that he did.
Max had many talents; his green thumb was well-known, his beautiful vegetable garden was his sanctuary where he spend countless hours nurturing his plants and finding peace in nature. Also an adept woodworker, Max loved working with his lathe. Each piece, meticulously made, reflected his talent and creativity. He took great joy in gifting his finished work to friends and family.
Max leaves behind his sister Barbara Blair and his children; Michael J (Renee) Hillyard, Karl M (Denise) Hillyard, Sandra (Richard) Brough and Ned W (Trenna) Hillyard. Along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We will miss him dearly but will remember him by the smell of campfires and the taste of fresh vegetables. The vision of high mountain vistas and the sound of laughter.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Friday, August 16, 2024 at the LDS Church in Smithfield located at 640 North 200 East. Friends and family may call on the family at the chapel immediately prior to services from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow the services and will take place at the Smithfield Cemetery.
