Melvin Landell Ballard

January 7, 1926 — September 20, 2013

Melvin Landell Ballard, 87, returned home on September 20, 2013. He was born January 7, 1926 to Melvin Joseph and Audria Munk Ballard. Landell was raised on the family farm in Benson, Utah and the farm became his vocation.
He attended Benson Elementary School, Smithfield Junior High, and North Cache High School. In 1944 he joined the Army and did his training in Georgia and Arkansas. He served in the Philippines and in Japan. He enjoyed reminiscing about experiences and often shared the story of encountering General Douglas MacArthur.
He married Lois Hancey on January 27, 1945 in Benton, Arkansas where he was stationed in the Army. They were sealed in 1951 in the Logan, Utah Temple. They made their home on the farm in Benson for over fifty years where they raised cows, pigs, corn, hay, some horses, a few dogs, sugar beets, grain, a goat or two, and their four children. Farmers, of necessity, work hard, but this famer loved to play hard as well. Over the years he enjoyed hunting, horseback riding in the mountains, snowmobiling, flying his airplane, and, his favorite, riding his Harley. He rode that Harley for hundreds of hours covering thousands of miles, enjoying the company of his wife and friends and making new friends and memoires along the way.
Landell was preceded in death by his parents; his ex-wife; sister and brother-in-law, Nadine and Myron Richards; and brother-in-law, Carl Ham.
He is survived by his children and their spouses; Lanny and Colleen Ballard, Tony, Ann and Lex Low, and Cathy and George Fox; eight grandchildren, Bart Ballard, Marianne Farnsworth, Kevin Low, Travis Low, Tyler Low, Greg Fox, Jared Fox, and Stephanie Liechty; 17 great-grandchildren; sisters, Donna Ham and Ruth Dance; brothers-in-law, Maurice Hancey and Wayne Bankhead; and sisters-in-law, LaFaye Bankhead, Rosalie Hancey, Pat Hancey, and Jacky Hancey.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 on Thursday, September 26, 2013 at the Nelson Funeral Home, 162 East 400 North, Logan, under the direction of Bishop Todd Ballard. Interment will follow at the Logan City Cemetery.
