Robert McCreary passed peacefully Saturday, October 24th, 2026, in Logan, Utah after a long, hard battle with cancer. His body was tired, but his spirit was full. Robert lived a full life despite his ongoing challenges with disease and many the complications that came with it.
Robert was born in Ogden, Utah to Robert “Bob” and Kathleen “Kathy” McCreary. His start in life was rough, being born premature and spending time in the NICU. He grew up in Clinton, Utah attended school, in Davis County and graduated from Clearfield High School in 1988. His younger years were spent with his brother Michael, and many friends. Robert was involved in scouting and earned the honor of Eagle Scout. He played baseball and soccer. He was a good student and enjoyed learning. In high school, he was involved in theater and worked on set design and sound and lights for productions, including Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. He loved ‘80’s music, working at Lagoon, and was in the ROTC wanting to fly helicopters someday. He spent time with his grandparents working with their farm animals feeding and caring for them, fishing and playing with his cousins.
As an adult Robert worked in the grocery business, where he met the love of his life Kandace. Their first date was Halloween of 1998 and they both knew that it was meant to be. They married in 1999 and have spent their life together. Robert and Kandace moved to back to Cache Valley after she graduated college. Robert started working for his father-in-law, Lynn Butterfield at Steve Regan Company and took over the business after Lynn retired. Robert loved Steve Regan, his customers, his employees and work. He worked up until the last week of his life. He was great friends with his coworkers Bari, Shaun, Lynette, the list could go on.
Robert’s life was filled with challenges, love, adventures, good times and down times. Robert was diagnosed with testicular cancer at age 19 and faced the first of many battles with the disease. At such a young age he was asked to get is affairs in order, because he wasn’t likely to survive. But he did. The cancer came back again and again metastasized to his lymphatic system, this time Kandace joined him in his fight. Robert underwent treatments including surgeries, radiation, high-dose chemo and bone marrow transplants. In Nov. 2023 and Aug 2025 the cancer returned, this time targeting his vertebra. Robert wanted to fight and Kandace stood with him every step of the way. Oncology became a mainstay in their life. Oct of 2025 Robert had surgery to remove cancerous vertebras, a surgery that cut his back open over 20 inches and placed metal rods and ceramic discs, and should have solved the problem. Neither Robert or Kandace knew it was just the beginning. Just two weeks later, Robert’s gallbladder was gangrenous and had to be removed. A month later his back incision dehisced and was infected and they found that the cancer had spread further into additional vertebra. Wound Care nursing was added to the team and he spent the next ten months working to get his back closed up. High-dose chemo was started in December and continued through April. He got two separate bacterial infections- staph infections, that halted chemo working with infectious disease. In July he became hypotensive and started having falls. He broke his foot in three places and was in a cast for months. He did radiation in August and September as the cancer continued to grow. Another fall led to a fracture in the L-4 vertebra. Robert continued to fight with more strength than anyone could understand. He lived with pain, weakness, and fatigue, but continued to work and when asked, would say he was doing good; he could handle it. Robert’s assignment and mission on Earth was complete, 10-24.
Robert loved his family, friends, neighborhood and community. He believed strongly in the work of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, local 3114. He volunteered his time to give to charity; first as a member, then a Trustee and Secretary maintaining financial records and tax information. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Central Park Ward. Our Ward family was there for him when his family couldn’t be. Robert loved to be home and spent so many good evenings around the fire with his friends Will and Zephie and Karen and Arvin. Robert mostly loved his family, spending time working around the house and caring for his many animals.
Robert is survived by his wife, Kandace McCreary. A mother-in-law, Maggie Butterfield, brother-in-law, Cody (Camille) Bowler and his children. His parents and his brother, Robert “Bob” and Kathy McCreary and Michael McCreary. Several aunts, uncles, cousins and nephews, including a special bond with his Aunt Libby and cousin Brent Ross on Robert’s side and Uncle Royal on Kandace’s side. He is grateful to his many friends Will, Zephie, Arvin, Karen, Josh, Bari, Lynnette, Shaun, and Steve Regan coworkers, and Michelle, Lynn and Wade ministering to the end for him.
