Tess LaDawn Stowell passed away peacefully in her home in Lewiston, Utah on Friday, October 14, 2022. She was born on March 31, 1933, in Logan, Utah to Mike and Lima Stowell; the oldest of four girls. She was raised in Lewiston and graduated from North Cache High School. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and had a testimony and love for her Savior. She held many callings and loved to serve others. She instilled serving others in her children by taking them with her as she would make visits or take a treat to brighten someone’s day. She had five children, 14 grandchildren, and 27 great-grandchildren, each of whom was a shining star in her life.
Tess was never one to seek the spotlight or bring attention to herself, but was always sensitive of those who may have felt left out. She was happiest being in the background watching her family accel in their activities and especially loved to rock her newborn grandchildren. She was a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed cooking for her family. Homemade candy at Christmas was her specialty. She loved holidays and life’s events because she knew she would be surrounded by her family. Nieces, nephews, friends of her children were loved as her own and they were always welcome. When someone came to visit, there were always plenty of cookies on the counter and Casco Ice Cream bars or Fat Boys in the freezer. She also loved to work in her garden, make quilts for her children and grandchildren, and plant colorful flower that filled her flowerbeds. A visit to grandma’s house was full of games, crafts, and fun.
When she married, the family embarked on a military career with the Air Force. Uncle Sam took her across the United States and back. She most enjoyed the Northeast with its fall colors and colonial history. However, every summer she returned with her children to Cache Valley, the place she loved more than anywhere. When the family retired from the Air Force, she once again moved home to Lewiston. After her children were grown and gone, she landed her favorite job, working as a teacher’s aide in the first grade at Lewiston Elementary. Tess loved all children and had a knack for helping them learn and accel and feel good about the work they had done.
Tess will be missed by all who knew her. We are grateful for her example of service and love that was felt by more than we can count. Tess was proceeded in death by her parents, her sister BarDee Stein, brother-in-law Ray Stein, and her two sons Mike and Doug. She is survived by her sisters Marcia Parish (Alan), Nancy Griffin, her three daughters Michele Allen (Rod), Dawn Parker (Kory), Kim Royter (Jeff), 14 grandchildren, and 27 great-grandchildren.
