Tom Hancock Barker, age 70, of Newton, Utah, passed away peacefully at his home on April 21, 2020.
Tom was born November 20, 1949, in Dallas, Texas, to Mitchell and Virgie Barker. After graduating, he honorably served his country in the United States Navy from 1968 to 1974, during which he was stationed in both the Korean conflict and the Vietnam War. Tom was very patriotic and loved the country he served.
Though he did not have a large family network, Tom found deep connection within the town of Newton. He was known as a quiet man who often kept to himself, yet his kindness was evident through countless small acts of service. Each year, he would quietly ask his bishop how he might help—whether donating turkeys at Thanksgiving, or assisting families in need at Christmastime. His neighbors and friends remember him as a silent server, a man who gave without seeking recognition.
Tom was once married, though the marriage ended in divorce, and he had no children. Still, his life was filled with meaningful friendships, and he was cared for by the close-knit Newton community who looked out for him, as he did for them.
He will be remembered with gratitude for his service to our country, and with fondness for his humble generosity and quiet strength.
